Experts note that Fidelity's estimate is the net present value of health-care expenditures over a 20-year period. In other words, in simple non-inflation-adjusted terms, a 65-year old couple with a 20-year life expectancy would spend on average $11,250 per year on health care. Still the question remains: What can be done to make retiree health-care costs less overwhelming? Fidelity and other experts have some tips including:

“The best way to avoid future health-care costs is to spend one's money and time wisely on health care today, said Cooper. He recommends, for instance, hiring a personal trainer who can help develop an exercise and nutrition program that will improve the odds of spending less on health care later"
